Field of view calculator

Angle of view for a rectilinear lens focused at infinity, calculated separately for the sensor's width, height and diagonal.

Vertical

Diagonal

The formula

Field of view = 2 × atan(d ÷ (2 × f)), where f is the focal length and d is the sensor dimension along the direction you are measuring: width for horizontal, height for vertical and the diagonal for diagonal field of view.

Using the real width and height matters. Two formats with the same crop factor but different aspect ratios have the same diagonal field of view and different horizontal and vertical angles. Lens makers usually quote the diagonal figure.

Equivalent focal lengthfocal length × crop factor

Field of view2 × atan(sensor dimension ÷ (2 × focal length))

Assumes a rectilinear lens focused at infinity. Fisheye lenses and close focusing give different angles.
